Cavanaugh Ponds and Black River Riparian Area Field Trip (10/24/06) Highlights
It was a foggy morning when we started on the Monday Morning Hotspots field trip.
We started at Cavanaugh Ponds and were disappointed in the number of ducks, only a few AMERICAN WIGEON and PIED-BILLED GREBES. There were quite a few spawning sockeye salmon in the river. The highlight of the trip was an AMERICAN DIPPER that cooperated and gave us long looks through the scopes.
We did see a number of small birds - two species each of KINGLETS, WRENS and CHICKADEES. We also saw BUSHTITS, FOX and SONG SPARROW, and a BELTED KINGFISHER. We then went to the Black River Riparian area where the fog gave way to partly sunny skies. We found many species of ducks - GREEN-WINGED TEAL, GADWALL, NORTHERN SHOVELER, RING-NECKED DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD, and a beautiful pair of WOOD DUCKS. GREAT BLUE HERONS and a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER were also seen. There were 11 birders and 28 species seen.
