Cougar Mountain Regional Park Field Trip (2/27/06) Highlights
This was a Monday Morning Hotspots field trip on a cloudy, but relatively warm day in the 50s. We didn't see a large number of birds, but we saw some quality birds.
Before we left the Park & Ride we saw a Red-tailed Hawk perched in a tree and then flying away. Early on the walk one person saw a large, dark bird (possibly an owl) flying through the fir trees and landing in one. We searched for quite a while but couldn't find it.
We got good looks at a Brown Creeper and a female and male Hairy Woodpecker. American Crows were heard, a number of American Robins were seen, both Winter and Bewick's Wrens were heard and seen. Spotted Towhees and Song Sparrows were present, as well as Black-capped Chickadees.
A number of Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets were moving through the brush. Near the end of the about 2 mile walk we saw a Sharp-shinned Hawk fly into a tree, which allowed us fairly good views. Rock Pigeons were seen from the car while driving back to the Park & Ride. 8 birders and 14 species.
