Des Moines Marina and Saltwater State Park Field Trip (12/9/04) Highlights
The calm weather and flat water allowed for very good looks at the waterfowl.
A handsome Pacific Loon was close to the fishing pier while Surf and White-winged Scoter were nearby. Horned, Red-necked and Western Grebe joined the mix of Common and Barrow's Goldeneye. A few Red-breasted Merganser and Pigeon Guillemot were also scoped.
Belted Kingfishers busily captured fish while colorful Harlequin Ducks reflected their beauty in the water. Several Black Scoter were scoped at a couple of the birding stops. A Spotted Sandpiper tried to hide behind a log but was eventually seen by all.
Song birds were few but included Song Sparrow, Winter Wren, Pine Siskin, House Finch and Cedar Waxwing. There were12 birders and 39 species sighted.
