Des Moines Marina, Salt Water State Park, and Redondo Field Trip (12/11/03) Highlights
An albino Yellow-billed Loon was quickly spotted off Redondo Beach and eventually it moved in close to the beach to give everyone excellent looks at its pale, pinkish bill.
This is a stunningly handsome white loon.
At the marina, a Spotted Sandpiper worked the jetty while Rhinocerous Auklet, Pigeon Guillemot, Red-necked and Horned Grebe, Barrow's Goldeneye, and Harlequin Duck fed in the calm water. All three scoter species were seen from the state park.
Land birds included Band-tailed Pigeon, Bewick's Wren, and Song Sparrow. To everyone's delight, many Orca were seen breaching off Vashon Island. A perched Merlin was seen from the cars as the group ended the birding day.
There were 8 birds and 41 species sighted.
