Grays Harbor Loop Field Trip (8/24/02) Highlights

It was a cloudy, cool day on the coast, but an enjoyable day for birding.

Raptors included three Osprey (two at nests), 10 Turkey Vultures, 1 Bald Eagle, 2 Northern Harrier and 12 Red-tailed Hawks. At the City Park at Raymond we found Black-throated Gray and Wilson’s Warblers, Common Yellowthroat, and we had very good looks at a Green Heron.

At Tokeland and Bottle Beach there were numerous Brown Pelican, Marbled Godwit, Semipalmated Plover, Willet, Whimbrel, Caspian Tern, Western and Least Sandpiper, Black Turnstone, and a few Ruddy Turnstone. Westport resulted in Western Grebe, Common Murre, Pigeon Guillemot and Rhinocerus Auklet.

We ended up with a Western Scrub-Jay at the usual place on Fairground Road near Elma. There were 12 birders and56 species sighted.
