Juanita Bay Park Field Trip (1/9/03) Highlights
For everyone arriving at the Park, there were many scopes focused on the Merlin eating a meal at the top of a snag.
The Red-tailed Hawk was nearly forgotten. Small birds were few, but that didn't matter when the Rough-legged Hawk (a first for the park) flew to the top of a conifer. Unfortunately, crows drove it off all too soon.
A Cooper's Hawk put up with the crows as it perched in a deciduous tree for all to see. Later two Bald Eagles soared across the bay and in a cooperative effort successfully tired an American Coot that became a meal for one of the eagles.
As everyone headed back to the cars, a Sharp-shinned Hawk was seen perched in a tree with a second Cooper's Hawk. It was a grand day for birding in a local park. There were17 birders and 47 species sighted.
