Moss Lake Field Trip (8/12/04) Highlights
Much of the excitement of birding comes from not knowing what birds may be seen and on a hot day in the Moss Lake woods, the usual birds were scarce.
However, upon the group's arrival, a Greater Yellowlegs could be heard calling. Coming upon a feeding flock of at least 40 Evening Grosbeaks was delightful. A Brown Creeper foraged nearby. A Wood Duck, Willow and Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Pileated Woodpecker, and Cedar Waxwing were found near the lake along with swallows.
Many Band-tailed Pigeons flew overhead as did a few Turkey Vultures and several Vaux's Swifts. From the back side of the lake a Mourning Dove and an American Kestrel got everyone's attention. Calling Red Crossbills gave a fly-by. During lunch a juvenile Cooper's Hawk circled overhead showing off it's stunning wing and tail banding.
There were 10 birders and 25 species sighted.
