North Fork Stilliguamish River Field Trip (10/11/03) Highlights
Despite dire predictions of rain we stayed dry while birding Melinda B's place in a pristine area in the North Fork of the Stilliguamish River valley.
A Green Heron flew across the river and perched on a limb for excellent viewing. We watched Common Mergansers frantically diving for small fish. In an area where there were 100+ dead and spawning salmon, we saw at least 6 American Dippers actively dipping and feeding in the water.
Two Ruffed Grouse were in the middle of a trail in the woods. They offered extensive good looks as they slowly walked ahead of us. There were a number of Belted Kingfishers, one Varied Thrush, both Ruby- and Golden-crowned Kinglets and a Winter Wren.
After lunch we went to the Fortson Mill Ponds where we saw American Wigeon and more spawning salmon, some within 8-10 feet. Shortly after leaving, we saw an educated Ring-necked Pheasant walking on the side of Highway 530 , correctly facing traffic.
There were 6 Birders and 28 Species sighted.
