South Alki Beach Tidal Pools Field Trip (6/23/01) Highlights
Seven birders visited the intertidal shore of south Alki Beach at an extreme low tide of minus 4 feet on a mostly clear day.
We were led by Jim and Nancy Roberts. Species of sea life were found from most of the phyla of invertebrates of the Pacific Northwest coast. Eel grass, fed upon by Brant geese, as well as red, green and brown seaweeds were examined for the sea life found under the protection of the seaweeds.
Among the numerous animals seen were various shrimp, crabs, anemones, lion’s mane jellyfish, sea cucumbers, many marine worms, clams, barnacles, sea stars, live sand dollars and gumboot chiton.
We also saw seven species of birds with the most notable being Great Blue Herons.
