Tukwila, Kent and Boeing Ponds Field Trip (9/11/03) Highlights

It was a cloudy, but comfortable morning and the showers held off until noon.

We saw or heard Greater Yellowlegs at all three locations. At Boeing Ponds we had a good comparison between the Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs. We saw seven waterfowl species including Hooded Merganser at Tukwila, and Northern Shoveler and American Wigeon at Kent Ponds.

Also at Kent Ponds we saw a young striped-head Pied-billed Grebe and a Belted Kingfisher trying to cope with a large fish. We looked at four raptor species including an Osprey, 2 American Kestrel, Red-tailed and Cooper's Hawks.

Northern Flickers were numerous, as well as Song, Savannah, Lincoln's and White- crowned Sparrows. A single Cedar Waxwing was perched on a wire.

Our group included a couple from Emmett, Idaho and a woman from Columbia, Maryland. In all, there were 9 birders and 33 species sighted.
