La Conner Nature Cruise Field Trip (6/30/01) Highlights
About 30 people had a great time on the Whale Cruise.
Saw lots of Orcas off of San Juan Island. Also lots of boats. The highlights for birds were lots of Rhinoceros Auklets and Common Murres. A couple of Marbled Murrelets were also seen.
A Black Oystercatcher was seen on the rocks going out to Deception Pass where the tricky current made it fun going under the bridge. The rocks in front of the bridge housed a colony of Pigeon Guillemots. Several Bald Eagles were seen during the cruise. Harbor seals sleeping on the rocks provided good looks.
Of course the usual kingfishers, cormorants, Great Blue Herons, etc., were also seen. I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and the great weather. Ken Macdonald is a great host and really helps people to enjoy the trip by filling in a little history of the area.
