Don't know what this bird is? Then this class is for you!
This class is designed for anyone who is interestedin shorebirdsand how to identify them, curious about where they go when they’re not on the coast, why they migrate through Washington, and what we should know about their conservation and incredible migrations. It is designed for the beginning and intermediate birder.
In two evening sessions we’ll cover methodologies for identifying shorebirds, so we learn how to separate out those “brown little peeps”and concentrate on viewing similarities and exploring ways of telling them apart. We’ll discuss the typical identification markings, as well as size, shape, habitat and behavior which will assist in the overall identification of each species.
The class is photographically based and you will see multiple images of each bird, including their various stages: juvenile, adult, breeding, and male/female. For shorebirds that are similar, such as, Western & Least Sandpipers, side by side images will demonstrate not only the similarities, but their remarkable differences.
The field trip will be a full day, with a dozen or more stops that will offer a close view of just about all of the common coastal shorebirds. If the class is full, we’ll split the class into two field trips. This is easier on the birds and the instructor.
Possible species include; Black-bellied Plover, Semipalmated Plovers, Sanderling, Dunlin, Least & Western Sandpipers, Ruddy Turnstone, Short-billed Dowitcher, Willet, Whimbrel, and Marbled Godwit.
