The Sanctuary is located in the center of the Fraser River estuary, which is of international significance to birds migrating along the Pacific Flyway. It contains ponds, natural tidal marshes, and sloughs, all of which provide important resting and feeding areas in January for thousands of birds that have arrived from their northern or interior breeding grounds. Birds we should see include hawks, eagles, owls, sparrows, woodpeckers, and great numbers of waterfowl (swans, geese, and ducks); also loons, grebes, gulls, and more. (Visit the Sanctuary website.)

Jim Rettig will lead the trip to explore the Sanctuary and surrounding areas. Jim will spend the night in the vicinity and look for birds in neighboring areas on Sunday. You may head home Saturday or spend the night as well.

The trip leaves Jim’s home in Woodinville at 6 a.m. Saturday, January 14. Dress appropriately and bring refreshment and money as needed. Carpool $30/passenger. Entry fees at the Sanctuary range from $3 to $6 Canadian depending on age. Each person will need an enhanced Washington State driver’s license or a passport to get back into the U.S. Call Jim for more information and travel arrangements and to reserve a spot. Jim Rettig: (425) 402-1833.
