The time has come for the first of many (hopefully) journeys to the island...  First ferry on Sunday is 1100, with high tide at 1437...  This gives us time to wander to the "top" of the island looking for eagles, osprey, harbor seals, and just enjoying the walk before returning to the lagoon to photograph shorebirds and waders on the incoming tide...

Dress for the occasion:  If you go for the closeups, there will be lots of mud, lots of it slippery as the best shots of the waders are 20-30 feet into the lagoon in the mud.   And if you burn, lots and lots of sunblock.  There is also an abundance of sand (go figure), so your gear needs to be hardy.

Tripods are OK, but you'll be lugging weight around for little benefit.  I carry my 100-400 handheld and have no problems getting most shots;  if you have a 200 or 300 zoom, that should be more than enough most of the time.  Bring LOTS OF BATTERIES and media card storage, too.

This is a PRIMITIVE island:  One restroom (small and not very pleasant on hot days), no vendors of any type on the island.  Bring your own food and water (a good daypack should be easy and large enough).  Typically, I start thinking of heading back about an hour or so after high tide, but you can stay (or return earlier) as long as all who ride with you come and go at the same time.

The "free" ferry is asking for donations this year...  $2/adult
