Pectoral Sandpiper by Tim BoyerWe will review the spring shorebird identification and emphasize the fall shorebirds, (Baird’s and Pectoral Sandpipers, Wandering Tattler, American and Pacific Golden Plovers) and whatever rarities are available.

It is designed for the beginning and intermediate birder. We’ll discuss the typical identification markings, as well as size, shape, habitat and behavior which will assist in the overall identification of each species.

There will be one evening session (REI Issaquah, 6:00 to 8:30 PM) and one Saturday field trip. Fieldtrip participants should bring layers (of warm clothes), lunch, water, binoculars and spotting scopes.

Class cost:

For Class and One Day field trip; For Members $65. For Non-Members $80

For Class only; For Members $35, for Non-Members $50

Evening session:

Wednesday September 14 6:00 to 8:30PM

Field trip: Saturday September 17th

Full day trip to Gray's Harbor, bring lunch, dress for the weather. We will travel approximately 300 miles, carpool costs will be about $30. We will leave the Wilburton Park N Ride at 6:30 AM and return about 12 hours later. We’ll make 6 to 12 stops that will offer a close view of most of the common coastal shorebirds, while searching for the fall migrants.

The class is photographically based and you will see multiple images of each bird, including their various stages: juvenile, adult, breeding, and male /female. For shorebirds that are similar, such as, Western & Least Sandpipers, side by side photographs will demonstrate not only the similarities, but the remarkable differences between species.
