Radar Ridge
I have included on this page some remarks and pictures from Discovery Coast Audubon. Editor's note: It would have been helpful to have them before we all voted.
Matt Mega from Seattle Audubon asks on 10/23/09:
"Could you send us a little more information? What were the issues that led to your endorsement of the project? How was the Murrelet science reviewed and what led you to be comfortable enough that there would not be a detrimental impact to the colonial? And was the endorsement put into writing via a resolution and/or how are you communicating this decision to the public?"
Patricia Cruse from Discovery Coast responds on 11/15/09:
"Since I know that Seattle Audubon had 8 questions at the Radar Ridge meeting other night I can only add that the biggest influence for this Board of Discovery Coast Audubon Society in Pacific County was their field trip to the wind farm site. After viewing that there were no nesting trees close to the planned wind turbines, and there would not be for over 30 years or more the Board could not understand why anyone would think that Marbled Murelets would even be close to the turbines. We also had all the info that you have, by now, and there never was any site inspection that convinced us that we would be slaughtering these birds, or for that matter any other bird. That particular area is mostly a rock pit, no trees and especially no trees that are of interest for nesting.
Thank you for your interest and I hope you understand by now how we could see this proposed resource for electricity most important and least harmful to anything.
I have decided to suggest now to our Board that we should now call this project “ENDANGERED ELECTRICITY SUPPLY!”
Patricia Cruse sends the additional email comments and pictures on 11/15/09:
"Basically these cover what it looks like. Barren, no trees, and very high up with good wind access.
We also have communication with a gentleman who knows that area better than most, other than the DNR forestry personnel, and his points of interest regarding why would the MMs fly that high, and what for made more sense than any other documentation. (I do not have permission at this time to share the writing with anyone).
I have also attached 3 informational papers regarding the project. Feel free to share with anyone.
