PROGRAM NIGHT - Weowna Park Old-Growth Restoration Enhancements

Join Bellevue Park Ranger Curtis Kukal for a virtual event to learn about ongoing efforts to preserve and restore the Weowna Park old-growth forest. This amazing habitat is home to diverse wildlife, including many native bird species.

Weowna Park, spanning 93 acres, is an ecological treasure offering extensive hiking trails through remnants of old-growth forest. The park is a key component of Bellevue's Lake-to-Lake Trail system, providing both recreational and environmental value to the community.

Since 2021, the Bellevue Parks & Community Services' Natural Resource Division has hosted restoration projects at Weowna Park. This initiative, supported by volunteers, teen interns from the Well K.E.P.T. program, department staff, and Washington Conservation Corps crewmembers, aims to enhance the park's natural ecosystem.

During the Zoom presentation, Curtis will detail the project's alignment with the Bellevue Natural Resource Stewardship Plan. He will emphasize the importance of old-growth forests like those in Weowna Park and explain the restoration techniques utilized. Attendees will also view short videos showcasing wildlife thriving in the restored areas.

Curtis brings extensive experience to the project. He earned a B.S. in Fisheries & Wildlife Management from the University of Missouri-Columbia and an M.S. in Wildlife Science from Texas Tech University. His role includes coordinating environmental programs, leading volunteer efforts, and educating the community about local wildlife. Kukal's background includes work with the Missouri Department of Conservation, The Nature Conservancy, and Washington State Parks
