Bird Walk at Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually NWR

Schedule:

  • Meet before 7am in front of the visitor center entrance

  • 7.00 - 10.00 am : Estuary trail and Estuary boardwalk (3 miles round trip)

  • 10.00 - 10.15 am : Rest break at the visitor centre

  • 10:15 - 11.30 pm : Twin Barn Loop Trail (1.3 miles including spur trails)

This park has various types of habitats and hence a wide variety of birds. You can join us for one or both the trails as you like. Please bring your binoculars, a bottle of water, a snack if you like and wear comfortable shoes & weather appropriate clothing. There are well-maintained restrooms available at the visitor centre and two port-a-potties located near the north end of the Twin Barns Loop Trail.

The refuge has a daily fee of $3.00 per four adults. This can be paid at the kiosk outside the visitor center. If you have a pass for the refuge, please keep it with you and don't leave it in your vehicle. Read more details about the refuge here.

Your safety is of paramount importance to Eastside Audubon. This is a meet-you-there trip. We will not be carpooling and the walk is limited to those vaccinated against COVID-19. The trip leaders are fully vaccinated. The following COVID-19 safety protocols apply for this bird walk:

  • This event is entirely outdoors but is restricted to fully vaccinated persons only.

  • Wearing a mask is optional during the walk, however you will need a mask to use the restrooms in the visitor centre.

  • Participants are required to self-assess prior to the walk and must not attend if they have any COVID related symptoms (e.g. elevated temperature) or have been in contact with anyone diagnosed with COVID-19 in the previous two weeks.

Pace: Leisurely walk. Terrain: Mostly flat grass/gravel/pavement/boardwalk. Distance: 4.5 miles.
