NOTE: For the month of May we hold our annual Birdathon fundraiser and ask that all field trip participants donate $25.00 per person for our field trips.
Registration closes May 1st
We will bird Lower Robinson Canyon in the L.T. Murray State Wildlife Recreation Area in Kittitas County southwest of Ellensburg. We hope to see Nashville and MacGillivray’s Warblers, Lazuli Bunting, Gray Flycatcher, Red-eyed Vireo, Western and Mountain Bluebirds, Western Tanager, Bullock’s Oriole, Chipping Sparrow, Yellow-breasted Chat, and many other Ponderosa pine forest birds. We will depart the parking lot of the Tibbetts Park & Ride in Issaquah at 6:00 a.m. and return by late afternoon. Carpool cost per passenger is $25 in addition to the donation. Driving time is about two hours in each direction.
The Robinson Canyon bird hike is about 5 miles roundtrip with a gradual elevation gain of 1000 feet and involves crossing lower Robinson Creek which requires walking on rocks and/or logs. The hike is rated “difficult” in the Desert Hikes book, however, we will stay in a “moderate” area of walking. The trail is not developed. (Note: we will not cross upper Ainsley Creek nor scramble to a viewpoint).
Bring snacks, lunch, water, sunscreen, a hat, insect repellant, binoculars, and anything else you take on a hike. A scope may be helpful at times, but is not required. The leader will bring a spotting scope. Wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes. Western rattlesnakes inhabit the area but are seldom seen. A Discover Pass is required for drivers. Limit 12 participants.
