Virtual Program Night: Don’t Touch That Nest (or can you)!

Now that nesting season is upon us, encounters with your backyard feathered friends will increase. You may want to help them out when they are challenged or maybe you just want a memento from the encounter. Did you know that you may be breaking a federal law by disturbing nesting birds or possessing a feather or egg collection? Learn about the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, its impacts on birds and how it is intertwined with the beginning of the National Audubon Society with Dr. Jim Tomko.

About the speaker: Dr. Jim Tomko’s interest in birds and wildlife began as a child. While his pals were putting together model airplanes and cars, he was painting and assembling models of a Robin, a Bluebird and a Goldfinch. His friends were often playing football and baseball while he wandered the wooded ravines turning over rocks and logs searching for frogs and salamanders. Jim began birding scientifically in his college ornithology class at Miami University where he majored in Zoology. Ohio State University granted him a Master's degree in Environmental Biology and a Doctorate in optometry. He truly enjoys getting to know a "local patch" of woodland and learning the seasonal changes in bird populations along with the habits of the residents and migrants. Jim supports his need for total immersion in nature with his optometry practice in Aurora, Ohio.  He hopes to see you on the trail someday.

This session will be conducted on Zoom. Please register to receive the Zoom meeting login details.
