Virtual Open House: Volunteer Leadership Opportunities Discussion
By Lori Danielson
I know as fellow birders, nature lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts, many of you choose to enjoy our community’s green spaces in the company of friends and family. Unfortunately, that’s proven more difficult this summer and fall with the ongoing threat of wildfires across our state and continuing challenges related to the coronavirus.
But, If you’re looking for a way to push back on those feelings of isolation, I offer you a suggestion—volunteer with Eastside Audubon. We’re hosting our very first Virtual Open House on October 29 at 7pm to better acquaint you with the mission and work of Eastside Audubon.
Our chapter is committed to addressing the impact of climate change and protecting the places we cherish the most. Thanks to the passion and dedication of our volunteers, we accomplish our mission through a range of programs including conserving habitat for birds and wildlife, advocating for environmental issues locally and in Olympia, and providing education to the community through speakers, classes, and birding trips.
For 40 years, community members just like you have been helping to protect our natural world by serving in a variety of positions within our organization including board of directors, coordinators, project leads, and more. Serving on Eastside Audubon’s Board of Directors has proven to be a fun way for me personally to meet new people and make a difference for the birds and our community. Due to the pandemic, we’ve started meeting monthly online via Zoom—creating more opportunities than ever for people passionate about the outdoors to get involved. We currently have open chair positions for birding, communication, education, financial development, membership, and volunteer coordination. Terms for the positions will begin in January 2021.
If you’re interested or have questions, please join us for our Virtual Open House meeting via Zoom being held on Thursday, October 29 at 7:00 p.m. Current board members will be in the session, available to answer your questions about what it’s like to be on the board and discuss open positions within the organization. If you can’t make the session, please send an email to president@eastsideaudubon.org to express interest or have your questions answered.
Eastside Audubon strives to have a diverse board and volunteer base that is representative of the community we serve. We value a variety of perspectives and life experiences and encourage people of all backgrounds to join. We believe diversity and inclusion among our leadership is critical to the success of the organization.
