President’s Letter: An Opportunity to Learn about Native Plants and Buy Them
By Lori Danielson
Growing more native plants in our yards is an important part of helping our declining bird populations survive. To learn more about the importance of native plants and how to incorporate them into your garden, I encourage you to sign up for the two-session online class being offered this month called “Getting to Tallamy’s National Park (In Your Back Yard).” Local landscape designer Anna Thurston will talk about how to make your yard inviting as a food source for our native birds. Read more about the class and sign up here.
If you’re ready to add native plants to your garden now, there’s an upcoming opportunity to buy them from the Washington Native Plant Society. They are one of the vendors at the “Cool Plants and Hot Topics” Master Gardener Fall Plant Sale and Talks, taking place on Sunday, September 11 at Bellevue Botanical Garden. Learn more here. I’ve heard the native plants sell out quickly, so get there early in the day!
I look forward to the coming of fall and the changes it brings, including the arrival of some of our winter resident birds. Enjoy the season!
