Don and Margaret Larkin were acknowledged for their outstanding nature photography in January, earning both national and local recognition.
The Larkins were individual winners in the annual North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) competition. And for the third time, they were named the Eastside Audubon Photographer of the Month for shots of Bald Eagles along the Nooksack River.
“The photos below are a sample of the images we made one morning last January,” Don says of the eagle photographs. “The Nooksack River and the Skagit River in Whatcom County are two great places to observe and photograph Bald Eagles during the runs of spawning chum salmon.”
Margaret adds, “We drove to the Welcome Bridge at dawn on a cold, wet morning. Fortunately, it had stopped raining the night before, leaving a damp, overcast mist in the air. We were rewarded with good views of the river and the eagles as they arrived. We were able to get some good shots of the eagles in flight with colorful backgrounds of the trees.”
Don was recently awarded the NANPA 2023 Judge’s Choice Winner in the Landscape category, and Margaret was selected as one of the top finalists in the Macro category. Don’s photo was shot at Cape Disappointment along the Washington coast. The contest receives thousands of entries from photographers all over the world.
