Jim Avery won the Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month award for May with his captivating shot of a Wilson’s Warbler. This marks the third time Avery has received this honor, showcasing his skill in bird photography as well as his proficiency with the Merlin Bird ID app.

"I was driving around the countryside looking for backroads or turnoffs where I could stop and photograph birds out of the car window," Avery says.

After having breakfast in Orting, he drove east on SH162. “I noticed a turnoff to South Prairie Carbon River Rd E where I could hear quite a few birdsongs,” he adds. “Merlin Bird ID identified several birds including Wilson's Warbler and Yellow Warbler. I parked with a view of some tree branches and was able to get some decent photos of both."

The location was about 4 miles east of Orting. See the map below.

Avery's use of the Merlin Bird ID app highlights its utility in bird photography. By leveraging technology, he enhances his ability to locate and identify bird species.
