Photo of the Month: August

Leah Turner Wins August Photo of the Month for Capturing Elusive Williamson's Sapsucker

Focal Length: 500mm | Exposure: 1/640 sec | Aperture: f/5.6 | ISO: 2500

Leah Turner has once again claimed the Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month award for August, marking her fifth win. Leah's winning photograph features the uncommon Williamson's Sapsucker, a bird seldom seen in Washington State.

The photo was taken in Eastern Washington, near Blewett Pass, after Leah hiked a few miles at dawn in search of various woodpeckers. “This was a life bird for me—I had been wanting to see one for a very long time," Leah says. "I was absolutely overjoyed to get close-up views and enough time to set up a decent photo.”

Leah’s persistence paid off as she heard the call of the sapsucker and spotted it near a cluster of mossy evergreens. “The bird appeared out of the shadows, with a sliver of sunlight shining on him, making his bright colors stand out in front of the dark background,” she says
