Photo of the Month: February

Mike Hoefgen Wins Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month for February

Mike Hoefgen has been named the Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month winner for February, recognized for his striking image of a Ruby-crowned Kinglet at Juanita Bay Park.

Hoefgen was watching both Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets darting between the branches along the boardwalk, trying to capture a clear shot. “They were flitting from branch to branch, and I was desperately trying to get a good shot without any branches or twigs blocking the view,” he says. “As some would say: ‘Persistence and patience pays off!’”

The winning image was taken at a shutter speed of 1/640, aperture f/4.5, ISO 2500, and a focal length of 195mm. The Ruby-crowned Kinglet, a small and energetic songbird, is known for its quick movements and distinctive red crown, which is often hidden unless the bird is excited.
