Christmas Bird Count Highlights 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant changes to our Christmas Bird Count this year. We could not form teams and carpools as we have for the past 36 years. However, team leaders were able to cover the CBC sections, and 15 others joined the ranks of our feeder watchers to help complete the count on Saturday, December 19, 2020.

When a Snowy Owl made home in the Queen Anne neighborhood on November 25th, birders all over flocked to the neighborhood to see this magnificent creature. A lifer for many, this opportunity was hard to pass up. Marlene Meyer, EAS member, was one of those who made the trek out to Seattle.

Back in November, I wrote an article describing Marymoor’s efforts to cut back on the invasive plant species, reed canary grass. The idea is to cut willow stakes from a Scouler’s Willow “harvest area” and plant the stakes where the Reed Canary Grass has taken over.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced all of us to adjust our lives in many ways, and this year’s Christmas Bird Count is no exception. Eastside Audubon has decided to hold a count on December 19 and will adopt the National Audubon Society protocol in order to conduct it safely for all participants.
