Birdwatching Group Leader

Objective:

Inspire a love for birds and nature by leading engaging and educational birdwatching outings for Eastside Audubon. This role is an opportunity to share your birding expertise and help new enthusiasts develop a deeper appreciation for wildlife and the environment.

Position Overview:

The Birdwatching Group Leader will guide small groups of participants on birdwatching excursions, introducing them to local bird species and fostering their understanding of bird behavior and habitats. Volunteers will play a key role in promoting conservation awareness while creating an enjoyable and inclusive experience for all participants. Training and resources will be provided.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead birdwatching outings in local parks and natural areas, ensuring a welcoming and safe environment for participants.

  • Share knowledge about bird identification, behaviors, habitats, and conservation efforts.

  • Assist participants in developing birdwatching skills, including using binoculars, identifying calls, and recognizing field markings.

  • Coordinate with Eastside Audubon staff to schedule and plan birdwatching events.

  • Encourage respectful and environmentally friendly practices during outings.

  • Document outings by providing participant feedback and sharing highlights for outreach materials.

Requirements:

  • Passion for birding and a desire to share your enthusiasm with others.

  • Basic knowledge of local bird species and identification techniques (additional training will be provided).

  • Comfortable leading and engaging with groups of varying ages and skill levels.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Availability to lead outings at least once per month (weekday and weekend options available).

  • Ability to walk or stand for extended periods outdoors in various weather conditions
